Clear phone cases are a love-hate affair. They show off your phone's original design. They look fresh and minimal.

And then, 2–3 months later, they look like a relic from a smoker's lounge.

Here's what's really happening—and what you can do about it.

Why Does TPU Turn Yellow?

TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) is the soft, flexible material used in most clear cases. It's excellent for shock absorption but chemically unstable when exposed to:

• UV light (sunlight breaks down polymer bonds)

• Heat (accelerates oxidation)

• Skin oils (acids and oils react with the material)

• Sweat (salts and moisture accelerate degradation)

The yellowing isn't dirt you can wash off. It's a chemical change in the material itself.

How to Slow Down Yellowing

You can't stop it entirely (chemistry is chemistry), but you can buy time:

1. Clean regularly – Remove oils and sweat with mild soap and water weekly

2. Limit sun exposure – Don't leave your phone on a car dashboard or sunny windowsill

3. Avoid heat – Keep your phone out of hot cars and away from radiators

4. Use UV-blocking screen protectors – Some block UV that also hits the back

How We Fight Yellowing in Our Clear Backplates

Our clear backplates use a PC + anti-yellowing TPU hybrid. The backplate itself is polycarbonate—which resists yellowing far better than TPU. The bumper (which is TPU) is treated with UV-stabilizers that slow oxidation.

The result:

• Backplate: Stays clear for years

• Bumper: May warm slightly over time (normal), but we use higher-grade TPU that outlasts cheap cases

What to Do If Yellowing Happens

If your existing clear case has already yellowed:

1. Clean it thoroughly – Sometimes surface oils make it look worse than it is

2. Try a baking soda paste – Mix with water, gently scrub, rinse—may lighten surface yellowing

3. Accept and replace – With our system, you can replace just the backplate (not the whole case) when you want a fresh clear look
